I Am A Caregiver | More Than Your Typical Soup Kitchen!

Blessings Soup Kitchen, Where All Are Welcomed

Ottumwa Regional Medical Center

Every Monday through Friday, Blessings Soup Kitchen welcomes over 200 hungry diners each day and serves them a hot, nutritious meal. Penny Runnels, Michelle Reno, and Deb Jones from Practice Management volunteer at Blessings each month.

Blessings Soup Kitchen has a few full-time volunteers, but they mostly rely on regular part-timers like Penny, Michelle, and Deb to serve up the delicious meals to those in need. “This isn’t your normal soup kitchen,” shares Penny Runnells. “Blessings Soup Kitchen volunteers pour water and serve the guests, just like at a nice sit-down restaurant. When folks leave, their table is bussed and reset for the next guest.”

There never seems to be a shortage of food. At the end of shift, when it comes down the last guest, there always seems to be enough food to go around. This soup kitchen is truly a “Blessing” to the community of Ottumwa as are the volunteers that help staff the establishment.
